On the eighth day of May, 1886, a pharmacist named John Stith Pemberton carried a jug of syrup down the street to Jacob's Pharmacy in Atlanta, Georgia. Mixed with carbonated water and sold for five cents a glass, it was called Coca-Cola. Nobody in that pharmacy knew they were witnessing the birth of the most recognized brand in human history.

The formula was a secret from the beginning — and it still is. What started as a patent medicine became a cultural artifact, a geopolitical symbol, a taste that billions of people associate with a specific moment in their lives.
